Citing Digital Marketing Sources

A practical reference for student projects. Citations do not make your work academic. They make it trustworthy.

· What to cite, and when

Digital marketing research rarely comes from one type of source. You will work with books, articles, platforms, analytics dashboards, news reports, and company websites. Knowing how to cite these correctly is part of professional credibility.

Good citations do three things. They show where your thinking comes from. They allow others to verify your claims. They signal professionalism and care. You are not expected to memorize citation rules. You are expected to be clear, honest, and consistent.

Cite when

You reference a framework. Use statistics or benchmarks. Describe platform behavior or algorithms. Reference a company case or real world event. Use research insights or expert commentary.

You do not need to cite

Your own analysis. Your own campaign ideas. Observations clearly labeled as your interpretation.

· Books

Use books for foundations, theory, and long term thinking.

Format: Author, A. A., and Author, B. B. (Year). Title of work (edition). Publisher.

Example: Kotler, P., and Keller, K. L. (2016). Marketing management (15th ed.). Pearson Education.

· Online articles and industry blogs

Use these for trends, examples, and applied thinking.

Format: Author, A. A. (Year, Month Day). Title of article. Publication name. URL

Example: Brand24. (2025, May 9). A complete guide to AI social media analysis. brand24.com

· News articles

Use news to support claims about regulation, ethics, platform changes, or crises. Always note the date because news ages quickly.

Example: Reuters. (2025). South Korea investigates data breach affecting major e commerce platform. reuters.com

· Company websites and platform resources

Use these to explain how platforms position themselves or explain features.

Example: Netflix. (n.d.). Netflix technology blog. netflixtechblog.com

· Analytics and benchmark reports

Use these for budget ranges, performance benchmarks, or industry norms.

· Good citation habits

Always include full URLs for online sources.
Use APA style consistently.
Do not hide weak thinking behind many citations.
One strong source is better than five shallow ones.
Cite where the idea came from, not where you first heard it.
