The English 자기소개서 Is Not a Cover Letter. Here Is What It Actually Is.
Every semester, a student sits in my office with a Western cover letter template open on one screen and a job posting from a Korean company on the other, trying to force one into the shape of the other. It does not work. And the reason it does not work is that they are not the same document.
The 자기소개서 (jasogaeseo, literally self-introduction letter) is its own genre. It has its own expected structure, its own set of prompts, and its own logic about what a candidate is supposed to reveal about themselves. Treating it as a cover letter with Korean characteristics is the single most common mistake I see, and it is an easy one to fix once you understand what the document is actually asking for.
A Cover Letter Sells. A 자기소개서 Explains.
A Western cover letter is fundamentally a pitch: here is what I have done, here is why it matters to you, hire me. A 자기소개서 is closer to a structured personal narrative. Korean employers use it to understand character, motivation, and how a candidate thinks about setbacks, not just to confirm qualifications that are already sitting in the resume.
This is why the standard 자기소개서 prompts look the way they do: growth background, personality strengths and weaknesses, a challenge you overcame, why this company and this role specifically. A cover letter answers “why should you hire me.” A 자기소개서 answers “who are you, and how do you handle the things that go wrong.”
Writing It in English Without Losing the Genre
When international candidates or Korean professionals applying to multinational companies need to write this document in English, the temptation is to default to cover letter conventions because that is the English-language template everyone knows. Resist it. Keep the 자기소개서 structure… the specific, honest narrative about a real challenge and what it taught you… and write it in clean, direct English. The genre does not change because the language does.
The weakness prompt is where most candidates lose the most ground. The instinct is to disguise a strength as a weakness (“I work too hard”). Korean HR readers have seen this a thousand times and it reads as evasive. A genuine weakness, honestly stated, followed by what you are actually doing about it, is far more persuasive than a humble-brag. This connects to something I come back to constantly with my students: failure is data, not a verdict. The same principle applies to how you write about it.
The Growth Background Section Is Not Your Biography
Candidates often try to summarize their entire life in the growth background section. Pick one formative thread… a value your family instilled, an experience that shaped how you work… and follow it through to how it shows up in your professional behavior today. One clear thread beats five vague ones every time. This is the same discipline behind a strong professional bio more generally: specificity over completeness.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 자기소개서 the same as a cover letter?
No. A cover letter pitches your qualifications for a specific role. A 자기소개서 is a structured personal narrative covering growth background, personality, a challenge overcome, and motivation for the role. It reveals character, not just credentials.
Should I write my 자기소개서 in English or Korean?
That depends entirely on the employer and role… check the job posting and company norms. If you are applying to a multinational or a role requiring English, write in clean, direct English while keeping the 자기소개서 structure and prompts intact rather than converting it into a Western cover letter format.
How do I answer the weakness prompt without sounding evasive?
State a real, specific weakness, then describe concretely what you are doing to address it. Disguised-strength answers (“I care too much”) are immediately recognized by experienced HR readers and read as evasive. Honesty reads as self-awareness, which is exactly what the prompt is testing for.
How long should each section of a 자기소개서 be?
Follow the character or word limit given, but within that limit, prioritize one specific, well-developed story per section over several shallow ones. A single vivid example beats a list of accomplishments every time this document is evaluated.
