The First Three Minutes of a Korean Interview
Most interview advice treats the first answer as the start of the interview. Korean interviewers say it is closer to the end. Two surveys of the people doing the hiring, read together with the latest research on first impressions, explain why the first three minutes deserve more preparation than the next thirty.
Getting to the Room Takes Longer Than It Used To
Before the first three minutes there is the wait to be invited at all. Every May, 국가데이터처 asks young Koreans how long it took to land a first paid job after graduating. In 2020 the answer was 10 months. By 2024 it was 11.5, the longest since the series began in 2006, and it has barely moved since.

More than eleven months of searching means more applications, more interviews and, for most candidates, more interviews lost. It also means that by the time someone reaches a final round, the interview is carrying a year of effort on a very short clock.

In 잡코리아’s survey of 883 interviewers at small and medium companies, a first impression formed in an average of 3 minutes 4 seconds. In 사람인’s survey of HR managers, the decision on whether a candidate passes took an average of 11 minutes, and more than half decided in under ten. The factor named most often was not the answer. It was posture and attitude, from the moment the candidate walked in.
Korean hiring went online, then automated

The first three minutes are no longer always in a room. In 2020 almost half of Korean employers moved at least one selection step online, and by the second half of 2025 most HR managers planned to use AI based services somewhere in hiring. The same rules about first impressions apply on a screen, with less room for error.
None of this is unique to Korea. A 2026 meta analysis of 145 studies on first impressions at work found that early impressions remain durable for more than a month, and that how people communicate shapes them more consistently than what they say. Korean interviewers are simply unusually candid about it.
The Research Has a Better Idea
The global evidence does not stop at describing the bias. It also says what works better. The most cited review of hiring methods, updated in 2022 by Paul Sackett and colleagues, found that structured interviews, where every candidate answers the same questions and is scored against the same evidence, predict job performance better than any other single method.
What the research says the first minutes should be
The global evidence agrees with Korean interviewers on speed. It disagrees on what should count.
세계 연구는 판단이 빠르다는 점에는 동의하지만, 무엇이 중요해야 하는지는 다르게 본다.
How impressions form
- Posture, expression and voice arrive before content
- Impressions stay durable for more than a month (meta analysis of 145 studies, 2026)
- Unstructured conversation lets the first minute decide
자세, 표정, 목소리가 내용보다 먼저 도착하고 오래 지속된다
What predicts performance
- Structured interviews have the highest validity of any predictor, r = .42
- Cognitive ability tests come next at .31
- The same questions for every candidate, scored against evidence
구조화 면접이 모든 예측 도구 중 타당도가 가장 높다(.42)

That matters for both sides of the table. For interviewers, it is an argument for slowing the first impression down with a scored structure. For candidates, it is a reminder that the structure they can control is their own.
What to Do With Your Three Minutes
Prepare the entrance as deliberately as the answers. Posture, a steady greeting, a pause before sitting and eye contact are not superficial in this setting; they are the evidence the interviewer is weighing before you speak.

Make the first answer an argument, not a timeline. “Tell me about yourself” is the one question you can be certain of, and it falls inside the window that decides the rest. One clear claim about what you bring, one specific piece of proof and one sentence on why this role is the next step will do more than a summary of your resume.

첫 대답은 미리 준비할 수 있는 대답이다. 연대기가 아니라 주장으로 만든다.
Bring your own structure. If the interview is not structured, answer as though it were: situation in a sentence, the decision you made, the result in a number. It gives the interviewer something to score instead of something to feel.
For the full method behind that first answer, see why most candidates fail the first question before it is finished.
